Mini Blog
- End of 2005: I have decided to stop writing stuff here for the time being though I will leave the existing pages in place. Two reasons: a certain lack of time plus the fact that a lot of what normally would go here ends up in the weekly newsletter I started in November. Lazy me hates duplicating work so there you are.
- 21 Dec 2005: There is still some sense left in America. A judge (!) has decided that “Intelligent Design” is not something the pupils of Dover Area School (Pennsylvania) need to learn in school. The Board of Directors of the school had thought (and voted) last year that the evil theory of Darwinism needed some positive counterweight and, creationism being nowadays almost universally discredited, chanced upon ID. Which is of course creationism lite. So a group of disgruntled parents who had an idea about what makes a theory scientific (and what not) went to court… and Judge John Jones, hear, hear, made it clear that ID is very nice indeed and a shiny new buzzword and all that — but not fit for teaching in Dover Area School. A small victory for common sense. (And at some point I will write a rant against ID. But not now, I am in Xmas mood.)
- 20 Dec 2005: Big hole between here and the first entry of the month but such is life. Just the other day I remarked to Vero, after we had that old tearjerker Casablanca on TV, that originally Ronald Reagan was supposed to play Rick Blaine (the Bogart character). And then we started to reminisce about all the silly jokes we used to make about Reagan when he became president… well, with hindsight Ronny wasn't too bad after all. In fact, from the vantage point of 2005 he was amazingly good:-)
- Let's just wait and see what sort of prez we have in another twenty years' time… Perhaps, with 20/20 hindsight, even Dubya will seem to be a great man!
- 01 Dec 2005: Here's another nice freeware discovery: Essential PIM. This is a relatively small package (~ 1 Megabyte) with contacts, to-do lists, notes and scheduling. Some small glitches, but very promising, not least because it runs from a USB stick (these tiny flash memory thingies one just pops into a USB connector). This is getting more and more important for me, because this way I can take many of the applications and data files I use at home (address books, email, password storage) with me on the road.
- I am sure that in five or ten years' time PCs will be generic boxes, the same all over the world, and we'll simply put in a small memory stick with all our personal settings, data, applications… perhaps even photos and music… A portable paradise!
