Madari Ridge
After we had seen Larnaca and environs (not much to see) we found ourselves with a free day or two on our hands. So we decided to go back into the mountains: Troodos. First of all there were a few painted churches we wanted to re-visit. Second there are some nice high-level walks to be had and we decided to put the two things together. Perhaps the best of these walks is along the Madari Ridge. This is a long, exposed spur extending from the main Troodos massif towards the east. On a good day one can see almost the whole island from there: the north, with Nicosia, the bay of Güzelyurt/Morphou, the Kyrenian Mountains… and the south, more or less from Larnaca to Limassol.
- The following snap shows the views towards the east: a veritable labyrinth of valleys and ridges.
- These odd spheres are remnants of the Greek gods Zeus and Apollo who used to play golf on the Cyprus hills, several millenia before the British came with their clubs. Nowadays the old balls are used by the same British for spying and listening deep into the Middle East.
- The north-west of the island, including on the left side, barely visible, the rounded coastline of the Güzelyurt/Morphou bay. Far in the background to the right, again barely visible, are the Kyrenian Mountains.
- And that was it: Cyprus 2005!
