Middle East 2005

One of the travel classics and something we wanted to do for a long, long time: travel overland from Cairo to Istanbul… perhaps the two most enthralling megalopolises in the Islamic world. And even after having spent a considerable amount of time in both cities I am still not sure which of the two is more fascinating: both shower the visitor with such a wealth of history, monuments, impressions, smells, sounds… But between Cairo and Istanbul there are of course some other great sites — the Sinai peninsula, Wadi Rum, Petra, Palmyra, Cappadocia, Ephesus… to name but a few. Yes, it was a wonderful journey.

We sent quite a few emails during the trip: there are pages with the English, German and French texts. No photos though, as we deliberately wanted to see how it feels to travel for such a long time and take not a single photo. (It felt great and I am not at all sure that taking the camera with us in spring 2006 was such a good idea. On the one hand having photos is great, afterwards, but on the other hand the act of taking them (or even of carrying a camera) destroys some of the fun and atmosphere of travelling. Difficult question, this one.)
