Avgas Gorges

The Avgas Gorges more or less belong to the Akamas peninsula but the hike up there is a highlight in its own right. A long, narrow gorge that in places reminded us of the wadis we scrambled through in Petra: deep water holes, slippery rocks, the walls growing higher and higher and at the same time getting narrower and narrower.

It is mostly the lower part of the gorge that's really awesome; later on it gets a bit more tame, though there is never a real path, so we had to find our own way, sometimes in the stream (fortunately almost dried-up), sometimes through the undergrowth.

And we were not alone. Lots of birds, lots of sheep and even more goats. At one point a really stupid goat above us (not the one on the photo) produced a rock fall: Vero was very nearly hit by a sizeable stone. (Imagine she would've been hit: how do you explain this to the relatives? “Err, yes, there was this goat and suddenly it fell and then there was that rock coming down…”) Anyway, we made it to the top (and back) in one piece, took us about two hours one way.

This is at the exit of the gorges, not far from the coast. As it was getting late, we actually camped somewhere on the sandy beaches nearby.
