Negombo Fish Market

(vero;2018-Oct-11)

Negombo is so near the airport that most tourists spend some time there when they arrive or leave the island. A must-see is a visit to the Lellama, Negombo's open air fish market near the Dutch fort.

This mural in Negombo sets the scene.
Fishing is done in small boats and the fish are caught with nets. As soon as the boats land on the beach, people rush to disentangle the fish from the nets. The fish are collected in baskets and brought further up the beach for processing. The baskets are emptied on tarpaulins and the fish are beheaded and gutted on the spot. Once gutted the fish are put back into the baskets. The baskets full of gutted fish are brought to the further processing stage, a bit further up the beach for drying. Gunnysacks are spread on the sand and the fish are placed on them for drying. Men do the fishing, women do the gutting and drying. One fish after the other… Not all fish are going through the drying process. Many are sold in the open air market above the beach. Difficult to get fresher fish than that. Fish is beautiful! Fish is colourful! Small fish, big fish. Close-up. Very fresh.
