Route des Kasbahs: Drâa Valley and Ouarzazate

(vero;2018-May-05)

Moving on from Boumalne, our next stop was Ouarzazate where we spent three full days. We used the town as a base to visit Aït Benhaddou on the first day and the palmeraie of Skoura on the third day. On the second day we hired a car and spent the day touring the Drâa Valley, driving up to Zagora and making a detour to N'Kob before returning to Ouarzazate. You can check our budget report for details of the car rental conditions.

The kasbah of Tamdaght, a village 7 km north of Aït Benhaddou. To get there we took a grand taxi from Ouarzazate to the turn off to Aït Benhaddou and caught a second one to Tamdaght. We walked back the 7 km to Aït Benhaddou along the road, a pleasant hike with hardly any traffic and nice views.
Like too many other kasbahs, the one of Tamdaght is quite ruined inside. View of Aït Benhaddou from the top of the ksar. The landscape around Aït Benhaddou. In the middle, the shrine of a Marabout (a Muslim holy man). View from a small hill opposite Aït Benhaddou with the mountains of the Atlas in the background. General view of Aït Benhaddou with the fort overlooking the ksar. Press F to expand the picture to its real size and use the bottom scroll bar to navigate through it. Drâa Valley — inside the ksar of Tamnougalt. Drâa Valley — Tamnougalt seen from the outside of the ksar. Drâa Valley — view of the palmeraie between Tamnougalt and Zagora. On the way to N'Kob, a feel of the American Far West. On the way to N'Kob, along the oued Ousraï. On the way to N'Kob. On the way to N'Kob. An isolated kasbah on the way to N'Kob. Drâa Valley — the landscape is like a giant topographical map with contour lines following the curves of the surrounding mountains. Drâa Valley. Kasbah in the palmeraie of Skoura. The kasbah of Amerhidil in Skoura. The kasbah of Amerhidil in Skoura.
