United Kingdom

Quaint, peculiar, funny: the United Kingdom… our "Wahlheimat".

We actually like it here: the weather (and the food) are not quite as bad as the natives (and the French) make you believe.

EH North East Sites

(vero;2022-July-25)

There is no such region as North East England in EH's world but for us it is everything north east of their South East region. We don't go there very often: the long drive and heavy traffic on the road are too much of a deterrent but we've made it to Warwickshire, Bedfordshire and Essex so far…

15.07.2022: Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire. One of the highlights of our EH season, we have a dedicated photo gallery for this site.
26.07.2022: Audley End House and Gardens, Essex. We have a dedicated photo gallery for this site. 26.07.2022: Wrest Park, Bedfordshire. We have a dedicated photo gallery for this site. 26.07.2022: Houghton House, Bedfordshire. Houghton House being so close to Wrest Park, we decided to make a small detour to have a look. The house was built in the early 17th century by Mary Herbert Countess of Pembroke as a sophisticated hunting lodge on land granted to her by King James I and the king himself visited twice in 1621. There is not much left on the ground but this page by English Heritage gives a good overview of how it looked like in its heyday and the view over the surrounding countryside is quite nice. 21.06.2016: Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland. Not part of our EH2022 season but we hiked some of Hadrian's Wall around Hexham in 2016. Walking this relatively small portion of the wall was quite an impressive experience. 21.06.2016: Housesteads Roman Fort, Northumberland. You don't need to pay for entrance to Housesteads if you simply intend to walk west along the wall from there. That's what we did.
