Cairo Istanbul 2005

One of the travel classics: travel overland from Cairo to Istanbul.

We were gone for four months and explored Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Turkey, spending around 4 weeks in each country.

Plenty of time to fill up with impressions and memories. And learn a lot about the history of this region.

Four months at the beginning of 2005 to explore Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Turkey. We had already been to Egypt and Syria: with a tour group for the former in 1988 and in 2002 for the latter. Touring Egypt as independent traveller was easy and the experience much better as what we remembered, the contact with the people much easier. As for Syria, it remained our favourite, with so much to see and its utterly friendly and welcoming people.

Jordan was (just) a bit more difficult to travel, the contact to the locals not as easy but the country has lots to offer: from snorkeling in the Red Sea to the impressive ruins of Petra and the desert of Wadi Rum to name just a few.

As for Turkey, this was our first time but we liked it very much and we've returned many times later.

We have listed the sixteen highlights of this trip in our last mail. But one memory has stayed with me for ever, although not mentioned on this list: seeing the giant ships in the Suez Canal seemingly ploughing their way through the desert.

As ever, there are also the Index and the Map pages for this section.
