South India 2015

As we began to plan our fourth trip to the subcontinent, we decided it was time to explore South India…

From Mumbai to Chennai via the southern tip of India: we visited Goa, some sites of Karnataka we had not seen before, toured the Western Ghats, got bored in Kerala before getting our fill of temples in Tamil Nadu.

Read on to learn how we fared along the road, what we saw, liked (and did not like).

Faces of South India

(vero;2015-May-14)

One reason why we love India is its people. Indians are friendly, outgoing and always good for a chat. If you like those pictures, check the gallery of portraits we created after our trip in 2013 for more.

Mumbai: one of the many commuters arriving at Victoria Terminus.
Mumbai: vendor at Crawford Market. Not all Indians are respectful of their gods… Children attending a temple procession in Kumbakonam. Goa: Hanifa, our landlady in Panjim, a strong-willed but quite endearing woman. Kamalapuram near Hampi: the man on the left was very chatty indeed, the other one much more reserved. Hampi: this woman was bringing water to men restoring a small temple in the ruins. Market vendor in Hassan. Hassan: this young man was making and selling popcorn near the market. He was very shy and it was fascinating to watch him working with efficiency and concentration, endlessly preparing popcorn, packing it in small plastic bags and selling it to passers-by (and us!). Hassan: family posing for a portrait in a photographer's shop. Madurai: bride and groom in the Meenakshi temple. Thomas trying his hand as porter at Mysore's flower market — to the great amusement of onlooking vendors. Young boys watching a temple procession in Kodaikanal. Kerala Backwaters: a serious little girl on the ferry to Aleppey. Kerala Backwaters: school girl finishing her home work on the ferry to school. Meeting those three friends (Nasreen, Abi and Sharmi) was one of the highlights of our visit to Trichy: they were enjoying the breeze on top of the fort while having a good time. Sharmi was very chatty and outgoing, always good for a laugh. Abi had to concentrate on her work: she was painting Nasreen's hands with Henna paste. Nasreen was a bit shy and had to keep still, so that Abi could paint her hand. Outside Kanyakumari's temple. Tiruvannamalai: a quick cuppa while waiting for the bus. Brihadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur: Murugan (god of war, son of Shiva and Parvati) about to crush a priest under his foot for disregarding the no phone temple policy. Beautiful girl selling plastic articles at Vellore's bus station. Crowd waiting for the train at Chennai Central Station.
