Nepal 2010

We have to admit it: we're certified Nepal addicts, labouring under that affliction since our first visit, in 1994.

After our slightly disappointing outing in the autumn of 2008, we decided to visit the Khumbu region once more, in the spring of 2010.

You'll find loads of tales, photos and information about that three-month trip and Nepal in general here.

02 April: Pangboche to Chukhung via Dingboche

From Pangboche first to Dingboche — with a rest at our old friends' lodge — then further on to cold and windy Chukhung.

03 April: Daytrip around Chukhung: Chukhung Glacier

Daytrip around Chukhung: an excursion to the area south of Chukhung and the Chukhung glacier, offering incredible views and the chance to do some glacier walking.

The heavily serrated snow ridges above Chukhung glacier.
A close-up of Everest, behind the Lhotse-Nuptse wall. This area, far to the south of Chukhung, is the only part in the valley where Everest is easily visible.

04 April: Daytrip around Chukhung: Chukhung Ri

Up Chukhung Ri, a modest hill north of Chukhung. Like Kala Pattar, this is a twin summit: the lower peak reaches about 5400m, the higher 5546m. Getting to the higher peak requires a short scramble and steady feet.

Ama Dablam and the lower Chukhung valley.
Makalu and the upper Chukhung valley. Note the big lake right of the middle: this is the Imja Tsho, a possible candidate for a GLOF.
A nice shot of the area we had visited yesterday: Chukhung glacier is the white area above the dark ridges in the middle of the photo. To the right is the Ama Dablam glacier (though Ama Dablam is not visible).
A really close close-up of the Lhotse-Nuptse wall. Note the stripes: these are the same sediments which form Everest's Yellow Band. Everest is not visible, but the cloud streaming from its summit is.

05 April: Daytrip around Chukhung: Kongma La

Final daytrip in the Chukhung area to the Kongma La. This is one of the three high passes in the Khumbu regularly crossed by trekkers. A long trek up there (5435m) but with fantastic views of Ama Dablam, the upper Chukhung valley and Makalu.

On the way to the Kongma La, view down the valley leading to Phortse and Namche. The Tengboche ridge is visible in the distance.
Kongma La: view eastwards, to Makalu and the upper Chukhung valley.
The Lhotse-Nuptse wall from Kongma La.
View down the other side, to the west: the lodges of Lobuche and Lobuche glacier.

06 April: Chukhung to Phortse

Retracing our steps, part 1: from Chukhung down to Phortse.

Time to say bye-bye: Pasang Buti, our kind host in Chukhung, and her younger daughter.
A valedictory view back. The path leading up to Dingboche is clearly visible.

07 April: Phortse to Namche

Retracing our steps, part 2: from Phortse to Namche.

Hey, no ice! These are the fields of Phortse. The brown heaps are home-made fertiliser.
