Nindia 2013

Nindia is short for Nepal and India, a 20 week trip we did in the first half of 2013.

We started and finished in Mumbai, travelling via Karnataka, Hampi and Hyderabad to the shores of Orissa before heading North to Nepal where we stayed 2 months, with a long trek in the Everest region.

From Kathmandu, we toured Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh before catching our plane back home.

A vibrant and tiring trip, full of impressions and memories.

Seen in India

(vero;2014-Jan-15)

India IS different, and that's why we love being there so much. There is plenty to see, smell, enjoy or wonder at. Here is just a small sample of what we saw on this trip.

Do you have a faulty stomach, or some sore feet? Just step in for some “Human Servicing”!
Aurangabad: a “rangoli” (made of coloured sand) in front of a house where there was a family celebration. It is supposed to bring good luck. Such and similar wall paintings are quite common in rural India where many villages are still lacking the most basic sanitation. Indian sweets and savouries: they taste as good as they look. We have found the Milka Cow: it lives in Badami. TV films retracing the lives of Hindu Gods (here it's Ganesh) are always very entertaining. An alternative to Western medicine? An interesting way to fill your empty tank!? Seen in Varanasi: we were told that this man is mad and the shackles shall prevent him from going too far away. Varanasi, one of the few cities where you can still see those small clay tea cups, thrown away after use, but unfortunately more and more replaced by environment unfriendly plastic - so much for progress! Ingenuous water wings for this little girl swimming in the Ganges in Varanasi. Live Like A Macroman: India is a man's world. An unwelcome guest in our bathroom in Allahabad. Lucknow: a close shave on the street. Trying to tackle the garbage problem in Lucknow! Again Lucknow: even the locals have difficulties coping with the heaps of smelling rubbish! We were amazed to see baobab trees in Mandu. You can actually buy ki Imli (Baobab fruits) in the street in Mandu. The inside of a ki Imli: you do not eat the hard, brown seeds, just the white flesh surrounding them. Shah Rukh Khan (a famous Bollywood actor) is everywhere, advertising for all kind of goods, from whisky to cement to male underwear: the Ultimate Indian Male. Raymond is a very popular brand for shirts and suits all over India. Our daily staple: Indian Veg Thali (papadums and various curries with rice and chapatis), here in our favourite joint in Indore. Cheeky monkeys can be a nuisance: this one on Elephanta Island has learnt from tourists how to drink from a bottle. Trying to keep the city clean in Mumbai: not sure those penalties are really enforced?!
