Hampshire
(vero;2024-July-25)
Hampshire is not only our home county: it is Jane Austen country and there are many memories of her around. We spend a lot of time hiking through its gentle countryside. Winchester is a pleasant historic city attracting many visitors. However, we are not so keen on the coast spoiled by the big harbour towns of Southampton, Portsmouth and Gosport; we rather keep to our country lanes.
Here are a few highlights:
- The Vyne, a Tudor house near Basingstoke
- Hinton Ampner, a stately home with gardens near Alresford
- Gilbert White's House and the Oates Collection in the quaint village of Selborne: home to the famous naturalist with some exhibits about Frank and Lawrence Oates, both explorers and fine specimen of the Victorian era
- Portchester Castle: from Roman fort to Norman tower keep castle and medieval royal palace
- The evocative ruins of Netley and Titchfield abbeys
- Pictures of the Hampshire countryside taken during some of our local walks
